F400 round 2 VKCF400 round 2 VKC

Race Report - Round 2 - Bridgestone Adrenalin Raceway

WHAT A NICE SIGHT TO HAVE 30 KARTS ON THE GRID
Round 2 was more closely contested than Round 1. Prokarts joined us for this race at the last moment; this boosted our already large field to a bludgeoning pack.
We welcomed the following new teams who joined us at Round 2:
Ramos Racing
BB& D Racing

Qualifying
The 2010 favorites and Round 1 winners continued where the left off, making the most of new tires to grab pole position by 0.1s from Rogue. The rest of the top seven was made up by LJ1, Temple Racing, Baldwin, Team Universal, and Bunker Racing.
The spread between the qualifiers was very small, as in Round 1, 4th to 7th separated by less than 0.5s. One Prokart made the top 8 qualifying draw, drew pole position, and sportingly relinquished it to move back to 8th spot. This left LJ1 on pole from Bunker, Rouge, Universal, Baldwin, Sportstar and Temple.
Race 1
The standing start regime was again employed to reduce speeds into turn one and it worked well enough. Bunker picked up a problem with a sticky clutch and had to start from the back in a 100cc stock style bump and go start.

You know it will be a good race if you can't fit all the karts into one shot on the grid, don't you? BTW what gives with all the yellow karts at the front, am I missing a fashion trend or something???

Here comes the high speed freight train, with the 2006 and 2007 champs leading the 2008 and 2009 champs.
Race one was closely contested by LJ1, Sportstar, Rogue, Baldwin and Temple right from the start. These teams were swopping positions every lap. It was truly inspired racing. At the first pit stops disaster hit the Rogue kart, losing the clutch yet again, and retirement from the lead yet again. The race was still close upfront, with Sportstar coming out on top followed by Baldwin 2nd, LJ1 3rd, and Temple 4th, all on the same lap. Universal was 5th, Sabertek 6th, Bunker 7th and Redline 8th.
Race 2
Teams lined up for the start which turned out to be a crazy cacophony of spinning and crashing in the midfield. Some teams forgot about cold tires and turn one, others forgot to look at the corner they were about to take and others just forgot...
After lap one Rogue was parked next to the circuit with a shattered rim and bent axle; out for the rest of the day. Up front though battle was resumed by the remaining protagonists from race 1.
The battle was fierce with Sportstar setting the pace again, flowed very closely by Baldwin, Temple and Sabertek in an ever changing order.
Race 2 went to Sportstar, Baldwin 2nd, Temple 3rd, and in keeping with their traditional close finishes, by beating Sabertek by only 0.9s
Race 3
Sportstar yet again, but this time taking the win on the last lap and beating LJ1 by 0.6s, after a full hour of racing and two pitstops!
Temple also did not disappoint taking 3rd from Baldwin by 0.2s this time. (honestly guys you need to change your name...)
In this heat the first 6 karts were separated by a total of only 40s.

Race 4
If you thought race 3 was a crackerjack you obviously weren't watching race 4. Being sidelined for the day gave me a good opportunity to watch some of the racing, and boy was I impressed. The Sportstar kart ran flawlessly for another race and they took a clean sweep for the day.
None of the front runners were able to break away and after an hour of racing the leaders were still at it hammer and tongs.
Temple had taken the lead and looked assured of a victory but in the dying moments of the race picked up a fuel problem and had to pit for a splash and dash to the end.
Sportstar 1st, Temple 2nd, only 0.5s ahead of LJ1, Sabertek 4th, Universal 5th, Baldwin 6th, Redline 7th and ITA 8th.

Congratulations to:
Sportstar proved that they are the team to beat this year, taking 4 victories from 4 starts.
The following teams won prizes at the prize giving draw:
Redline Racing - 40% discount on the entry for round 3 (two 40% discounts means they race for next to nothing at Bloem!)
Rogue Racing - 20% discount on the entry for round 3
Team Universal - 20% discount on the entry for round 3
Rockstar Racing - 20% discount on the entry for round 3, but in a very sporting gesture Roelf passed his prize on to Allstar Racing who has two very quick ladies in their team. Charmer isn't he...

Remember you have to be at prize giving to claim your prize; several teams were drawn but lost out...
Need for Speed lost out on a prize for the second consecutive time, as did DoDo Island Racing and ITA.

Special Thanks to:
Henry our COC who ran the event very well and managed the tight schedule and the large field impeccably.
All teams who entered and enjoyed the day with us. Yes some of you did have a crappy day, as did I, but when all is said and done, there is very little to rival watching a closely contested motor race, let alone being part of it.
Notes from the editor:
KNOW THE RULES, take note of the range of spark plugs allowed in the regulations. We found that some of the motors had odd plugs. The best one to use in the range seems to be the standard trusty old NGK BP6ES.
To any of the teams out there who are struggling or need help with something, put your hand up and ask! There will always be someone who will be able and prepared to assist.

See you all at Round 3 in Bloemfontein, believe me when I say you miss this, you miss out big time. We have 15 confirmed entrants so far.
Also take note that the date has been moved to the 22nd of May, and we will be sharing the event with the Prokarts.
Over and Out.
